Employment for Seniors

Many seniors still feel capable and willing to work when retired, however, a lot of them are discouraged from searching an employment because they mistakenly believe that employers are looking for young and physically fit labour force. However, the employers are becoming increasingly aware of the potentials of senior employees and are not as unwilling to hire a senior as many people wrongfully believe. This is due to the fact that seniors who are physically and mentally still able to work have a unique set of experience, knowledge and skills which young labour force often lacks. Finding an employment for seniors therefore is not as difficult as it may seem at a first glance.

It may be very difficult for seniors to compete with young job seekers in the types of job that require a lot of physical work or fine motor skills but most seniors usually are not interested in physically demanding jobs. Many seniors may also feel unable or are not prepared to work full-time which, however, does not significantly limit the employment opportunities for seniors. On the contrary, the fact that they already have a source of income and that many do not want or do not need a full-time job is often an advantage over younger job seekers who most often seek a full-time employment due to financial reasons. Employers may not always need a full-time employee and finding people willing to work a part time job is therefore often very challenging.

Seniors often tend to miss the fact that they have the luxury to actually choose what they would like to do as they are financially no longer depended on the wage. As a result, it is not uncommon for them to accept the first job that is offered to them although it may not be the most appropriate for their age, expertise or both. Not all employers are willing to hire seniors, however, many are although they often do not specifically mention it. For that reason seniors should determine what skills, knowledge and experience they to have to offer and what they would like to do before starting to search for an employment. In addition to having the freedom to choose what they would like to do, seniors are often enabled to choose how much they want to work and when because the employers are much more flexible than they may seem. Sometimes seniors are also paid better than their younger co-workers not due to their age but because the financial security they have makes them more likely to demand a better pay and actually get it.

Although senior employees are highly valued by many companies, age discrimination is not uncommon especially when it comes to full-time jobs. Like other types of discrimination, age discrimination is rarely obvious enough to be able to prove it. Nevertheless, there are plenty of employment opportunities for seniors and most who are willing to work do not face any major problems in finding work, to remain active in their later life and improve their financial situation.
